ATC is committed to encouraging young people to take an interest in STEM activities and careers. Earlier this year, ATC employees spoke with members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee about what it’s like to work in the utility industry.
As a follow up, ATC invited Club members to see how our system works. On Sept. 26, 16 Club members from high schools throughout Milwaukee and two Club staff members toured our Pewaukee system operations center where our employees monitor the electric grid around-the-clock every since day.
“The students were really engaged, asked a lot of good questions and were really interested in learning about how the electric grid works and the role ATC plays,” said ATC’s manager of real time operations Nate Wilke. “It was great to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm from all the students about what ATC does each day.”
“The students loved it and were very engaged,” said Brittney Piper, program manager for the Club’s Brighter Futures Program. “ATC answered the students’ 20 plus questions very well. We hope to plan another career exploration career panel and tour with ATC in the future.”
Boys & Girls Clubs Career Development programs, like Bright Futures, help Milwaukee youth develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. Through Club programs, members are introduced to various work environments, guest speakers, worksite tours, hands-on experience and career and financial planning assistance. For many members, this is their first opportunity to explore different industries and develop personal and professional goals. By following the career development programming path, they gain the skills and training necessary to successfully find employment.
