ATC employees talk about STEM careers at Boys & Girls Club

ATC is committed to encouraging youth to get excited about careers in STEM and the electric industry. As part of that effort, five ATC employees engaged with 16 students enrolled in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee Career Development Program on Monday, July 8.

During the panel discussion ATC employees shared their career path journeys and what they do at ATC. They also gave their recommendations on important choices to make in high school and college to set yourself up for success and how to market yourself to employers.

“The students loved it and were so engaged,” said Brittney Piper, Program Manager for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “Having companies like ATC talk to our members exposes them to the different career paths, which helps them understand what potential career opportunities may align with their interests, strengths, and passions. Career explorations like ATC open their minds to possibilities they might not have considered and inspire them to pursue different paths.”

Students asked about resources and opportunities available in college, different career paths they could explore and even the benefits of taking Advanced Placement classes in high school.

“STEM outreach is something that is near and dear to my heart. It is so rewarding to spend time engaging with the next generation of innovators and leaders,” said ATC Information Security Assurance Analyst Melissa Carmody. “Seeing the students light up realizing what is possible working for a utility was a highlight for me. As a first-generation college student, I recognize the importance of learning from others’ experiences. Creating the space for students to ask for advice — whether it be about internships, careers, or retirement planning — is paramount for their success.”

Boys & Girls Clubs Career Development programs help Milwaukee youth develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. Through Club programs, members are introduced to various work environments, guest speakers, worksite tours and hands-on experience, and career and financial planning assistance. For many members, this is their first opportunity to explore different industries and develop personal and professional goals. By following our career development programming path, they can gain the skills and training necessary to successfully find employment.
